About

MEDFORT is a non-profit organisation based in Italy and established in July 2020. It aims towards the preservation, enhancement and promotion of military heritage such as fortifications and generally relevant structures linked to military history. Our organisation particularly emphasises the structures located in the area of the Strait of Messina (in southern Italy), as well as those located in the Euro-Mediterranean context and beyond.

MEDFORT considers military heritage as a common wealth and as a tool for social inclusion. In the past, in fact, these particular structures were places of conflict and social division, but now they should be and must be considered as places for social and cultural interaction, meditation and intercultural dialogue.

Considering the fundamental principles expressed by the ‘Faro’ Convention, MEDFORT operates emphasising the link between the concepts of military heritage and “heritage community”. The latter defined as “people who value specific aspects of cultural heritage within the framework of public action, who wish to sustain and pass on to future generations” (‘Faro’ Convention 2005, art. 2).
